Soto Babat, Mee Rebus & Satay

As the first pearls of rain trickled down from the large pillows of grey clouds, we took shelter and waited to see out the spitting rain. The tinkling rain murmured like white noise while the cool wind whispered gently in the air. Soon, the noise lessen and the ploppy rain faded into a musical chime. Alhamdulliah for the blessed shower and for once we were happy to be caught in the rain instead of the scorching summer blaze.

With that we headed to our destination where a piping hot bowl of Soto Babat and sticks of juicy grilled Satay beckons.

Soto Babat is a concoction of clear chicken broth, cubes of lontong (compressed rice cakes), shredded chicken strips and beef tripe. The soup is garnished with crunchy sprouts, aromatic herbs and topped with a must have fiery soy sauce.

This is Mee Rebus, a yellow noodle dish served in thick savory gravy and garnished with slices of fresh chilies and dried tofu, sprinkles of fried shallots and a wedge of key lime. Sweet, sour, spicy all rolled into one.

Ahh.. An all time favourite which goes well with the kids and grown ups. Served with thick authentic peanut gravy (read; not peanut butter sauce), the freshly grilled, over charcoal, sticks of skewered marinated meat leaves the taste of home lingering in your mouth.
